Procrastinator’s procrastination

admin July 7th, 2008

I’d a few things I said I’d do in my holidays during the semester. So now that I’m on holidays, there are no more excuses.

Except, I always find myself putting them off. They aren’t big or anything, I’m just… I needed a rest (inner self: true that), doing other things (inner self: do them later!), or just lazy (mum: that’s no excuse!).

Here are a few things that was on my list couple days ago… I’m hoping that posting them on this blog will serve as a lovely subtle reminder. Cough.

  • Buy a few things:
    1. Personal girly things (i.e. fash wash… sanitary essentials…)
I actually did that yesterday with my mum… but that wasn’t because I was bothered… but I was starting to really need it. Blush.
    2. Rubber gloves.
So I can hand wash some clothes I’ve worn during the semester but never managed to wash. Which is why I’ve been putting this off as well.
But again, I bought these yesterday whilst shopping with mum, who kindly reminded me of it… Sigh.
    3. Medium envelope.
To send out the skirt I sold on eBay. But the buyer hasn’t paid yet, so I’ll leave that till later…
    4. Keyboard.
My keyboard is really really hard to press on, and since I developed RSI studying for my exams, Andrew and I switched so I can write notes on the computer… till I get myself a new one.
I put this one off initially because I didn’t want to spend money (I decided not to go back to work these holidays… well, not just yet anyway, I need some quality time for myself), but now I’m putting it off because Andrew told me to; he might be able to get a discount, says he =]
    5. Buying a gift.
Simply cos I don’t know what to get. Perhaps someone can recommend some gifts for a 2 year anniversary…
  • Organise a few outings as we’ve been neglecting one another because of uni:
    • My girls.
We haven’t seen each other for a really long time! And whom Imiss awfully! I must take initiative…sometime soon…
    • Jess.
Whom I had actually called and “arranged” to go out “sometime”… but haven’t set an actual date yet. Oh and it must be on a weekend as she is occupied Monday to Friday.
    • Mary.
Before semester 1 started, we organised something but something got in the way, so we decided to go out in the holidays. And I was going to ask her, but she (being the more organised one) beat me to it. We’re going out this Thursday night at 6pm for dinner and shopping.
    • Uni friends.
Because we hardly get to see each other for various reasons (everyone is doing their own thing, we’re taking different subjects because we’re majoring in different things, we don’t gym together from lack of time… etc). And… me, being really really organised, haven’t organised any thus far again.
I actually just received a message 2 minutes ago from a uni friend asking if we wanted to see a movie and have lunch on the Wednesday.
    • Other high school friends.
I haven’t seen them since forever!!! I’ll get off my lazy ass soon enough though…
    • My boyfriend.
Our 2 year anniversary is on the 14th this month, which is next Monday… but he works on weekdays…
  • Check results.
It comes out on the 10th or 11th July! I can’t wait (don’t need a reminder but it was on my list)!
  • Hand wash clothes.
  • Decide whether  should go to a few places:
    • Opeth concert (before the tickets get sold out!): it’s during week 6 of the next semester… mid-semester break is between week 9 and 10…
    • 2 Weddings: I know they’re a must, especially since they’re direct relatives, but finishing 3rd year uni with a good average is also very important!

Hence concludes my list thus far.

BSc Adv. Sci., year 3, semester 1

admin June 27th, 2008

So it’s officially the holidays now for this poor old uni student… Let’s have a little recap of my whole semester.

Where to start? I guess at the uttermost beginning?

Well, it has been quite a tough semester for me (tension headaches, lack of appetite, lack of sleep, exhaustion), and I know I’m not the only one because my friends have been pretty stressed out themselves (2 threw up… stress-induced).

Ok, scratch tough, it was HELL! And that doesn’t even begin to describe it! No exaggeration. Usually I love studying, it has been hard but nowhere, nowhere, nowhere near this!!

Let’s see… let’s start with changes that occurred to the uni itself this semester:

  • 14 week semester has been reduced to 12 weeks
Implication: same amount of work in less amount of time, which is crazy mad for us… we have at least something major due or a quiz/exam/test each week! The average for me was 3 assessments a week…
I had to miss out on a Porcupine Tree concert to study for the mid-semester exams (I had 3 that following week)… and anyone that know me well will know how important this was for me, how little I go out regardless, and how badly I broke down because I couldn’t make it! Their first tour in Australia, and they’ve been around for 20 years! But I’ve been convinced they’ll be back, someday soon.
  • Cutback on our STUVAC (study vacation)
Was initially about a week, now checking my student diary consisted of a Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - barely enough time to go through 4 full third year subjects!
  • Winter sessions taken away
    Implications: overloading (below).
  • BSc (Adv) and BMedSci WAM (weighted average mark) increased from 65 to 70
A few of my friends from Bsc (Adv) and BMedSci who has a WAM below 70 received warning emails, informing them if they don’t increase their average, they will get dropped down to BSc… Ever since knowing the possibility of dropping down to BSc, I had been feeling the pressure more than ever!
A BMedSci friend later told me that they have been told that changes have only been applied to newcomers, which relieved me for a bit before she told me that it mightn’t be the same for BSc (Adv)!! (Thanks so much.. ><)
  • Examination changes
Here’s an excerpt of the email we received. But to sum up, we are having:

    • Shorter exam period
    • 3 exams per day schedule
    • Exams on Saturday
  • Mid-semester break between week 2 and 3
After 3 months of break, having a uni break after the 2nd week of uni is rather… y’know. So after that is a period continuous studying for 10 weeks.
BUT, this didn’t concern me as I had to attend lab 9 to 5 daily for bacteria and disease laboratory work (which I really enjoyed, don’t get me wrong! In fact, I thought it was the best part of the course!)

So that was already giving me a hard time. Ranting on, these were the things I found personally stressful for me:

  • Overloading
As if four full subjects wasn’t enough on my plate, I (stupidly) decided to overload, another half subject (3UOC general education) instead of trying to do it in the summer session in case it spots get filled up since winter session has been taken away
  • My final exam timetable (5 exams in 7 days)
    • 13/06 MICR3041 (Immunology)
    • 16/06 BIOC3111 (Molecular biology of proteins)
    • 18/06 BIOC3261 (Molecular biology of nucleic acids: theory)
    • 18/06 MICR3081 (Bacteria and Disease)
    • 19/06 BIOC3261 (Molecular biology of nucleic acids: practical)
  • Changes towards the end of the final exams
Full story here - but basically, I was a victim of 2 exam rescheduling:

    • 18/06 MICR3081 moved to 19/06
    • 19/06 BIOC3261 moved to 21/06

So there you have it, a summary of what I had gone through in the past 13-14 weeks. Don’t be discouraged from third year science after reading this because rest assured, people do survive from things like this… (just barely in my case)…

Hope all students enjoy their hard earned, much needed holidays!

Dr. Sophie

admin May 17th, 2008

After my indecisiveness, I’d decided to ditch studying and go to Sophie’s BBQ at Coogee beach today to celebrate her finishing her PhD. And I’m glad I did!

Before I reached Coogee, I went and got her a box of celebrations and a rose =] The day was just very chilled out, lots of laughs and random/weird photo shoots, food (which I didn’t get to eat because I came later)… a nice break from all that uni stuff. The sky and weather was lovely as well! See?

Turning 20…

admin January 18th, 2008

What a peculiar day, I must say! I thought so, my friends knew so, and Tim (the one whom I described the “incidents” to) said so.

But first, some “normal” things.

At uni
Normality

So my 2 week summer course ends today with a 40% website presentation and a 30% final exam. Of course, even though it was a general education course, I was still pretty worried about the whole day.

So I got to class, ready yet nervous for the presentation, thinking that we had to explain every code that we used for the website and all. Turned out I had nothing to worry about at all! -_- He told groups of four to log into the school computers, load our sites and kicked us out of the room. Literally. After marking, he told us to come inside, grab our medium if we used one and then kicked us out of the room once again. Easy.

So we went to the law library, into the seminar rooms so we could “study”. As all study sessions proceed, we ended up cracking Russell Peters jokes, talking about some really random stuff, snacking, reading the papers (uni offers round 1 out today, how exciting!)… and towards the end of the “study session”, realised that we were all screwed! Well, not Andy, but the rest of us were!

Because the class was pretty big, the teacher decided to split the group into 2 to take the test. Julie, Huy, Sharan and I barely made the last 4 spots for the first test session! Phew!

Skip skip skip.

The test was pretty hard >.< Yep, a gen ed final exam was actually hard! I mean, what the hell? Some of the stuff we didn’t even learn about! -_- GAH!

Outing: Food
Weird incident 1

Meanwhile, outside was raining. Rats, why did it have to rain on my birthday? It hasn’t in how long? I don’t know. But longtime!

But seeing that it was my birthday, we decided to double date with Julie and Huy.

So first off, to eat!
Ichiban boshi!

We arrived and there was a huge line. Huy wanted to go somewhere else to eat but I didn’t want to because:

  • I was too bothered
  • It was raining: hard to get around
  • I like eating at Ichiban Boshi~~

So we asked one of the waitresses (who looked European but spoke fluent Japanese!) how long it would be till we get to go in. 20 minutes. Ok, 20 it is!

So after checking out Kinokuniya (a huge bookshop), we came out to wait with the guys. Then… something weird happened.

Some girl and her friends walked past our group, and she kind of stared straight at me, talking to her friend and all. All of us took notice of this but decided to ignore that.

Andy: It might be because she thought she knew you from somewhere.

And still, the staring continued.

Julie: Could she make it anymore obvious?!

And then suddenly, I saw her eyes make a dart to my chest area, staring ever so intently.

Huy: Maybe she’s looking at your badges…

So again, this was ignored, and her head stuck out a tiny bit, eyes still at my chest. At this stage, I was starting to feel a bit… uncomfortable.

Andy: Maybe she has bad eyesight…?

Her eyes wandered up and down a tiny, then fixes on my chest.

Huy: Man, if I wanted to check out your badges, I wouldn’t full stare or anything!

…

Waitress: Number 68.
Me: That’s us!

And I took my things and hurried the heck out of there. Okay, that was “Incident #1″. The meal was great, with Andy drinking a lot of water while finishing up my “very hot ramen”.

Outing: Shopping
Weird Incident 2

We got out of the building, and still it was raining. Julie said to go Myer, so we did. Somehow, we ended up at the lingerie section. Huy wanted to go to the games section so I shoo-ed Andy to go with him while we girls had some “alone time”. We did actually, but with one more person… And this is the beginning of “Incident #2″

Me and Julie were checking out hot hot bras when a saleslady came around and started introducing all the products to us, telling us what they are made of and how “spectacular” and “stunning” they all are.

Saleslady: The change rooms have very long lines so when you both are ready, I’ll pop you into our special change room.

So Julie and I must’ve grabbed 6 items each, giggling about how to escape from the saleslady because man, have you seen the price tags on some of these? And I know I definitely can’t afford things this much!

Ready!

Saleslady: So I’ll pop you in first, Wendy (she got my name wrong but oh well, I’ll be Wendy for a while)
Me: Oh it’s a single change room?
Saleslady: Yeah.
Me: How about we go in together Julie?
Julie: *drags me into the room, pulls the curtain close*

Inside…
Me: Man, this one costs $190!
Julie: Yeah, but they’re hot. I’m going to try this one first.
Me: Maybe I’ll try this one. *Whispers in her ears* How are we gonna escape?!
Julie: Don’t worry. Hey, reckon she thinks we’re lesbians?
Me: *looks in mirror* Yeah actually.

Curtain opens.
Shock.
Covers up.

Saleslady: Oh WOW, this one really pushes up your breast, Julie. See how it gives you that lift?
Me: Yeah, it really does Julie. Looks good.
Julie: Yeah shite!
Saleslady: And the red looks absolutely spectacular on you, Wendy.
Me: I like it actually.
Saleslady: Now hurry and try these one on, girls. *points to see-through red lace bra, disappears out of room*

Me: That was weird!
Julie: Mm. *starts changing* Can you turn around while I change into this one?
Me: Yeah. *hangs around, too embarrassed to try anything*
Saleslady: *pops in* Hi Julie and Wendy, how are you girls doing?
Julie: *covers*
Saleslady: Wendy, why aren’t you changed? Oh wow! Look at you Julie. Oh come on, don’t be shy, we all have breasts.
Julie: But my nipples are showing. *uncovers* Oh wait, you can’t see them much.
Saleslady: So what do you think?
Julie: Yeah I like it.
Saleslady: Now hurry and change into this *indicates to the see-through black lace one and disappears behind curtain*

By the looks of this, makes me wonder if we had a choice anymore? So anyway, by now, we started changing quickly and freely in front of one another before she pays an early visit…

Saleslady: Oh WOW, you both look very stunning! BOTH of you should be advertising for this! So what do you think?
Julie: Definitely like the black more then the red.
Me: Yeah, I agree with her. And I like this too.

Okay, this goes on for at least another 15 minutes with many “you look stunning” or “this is so HOT on you” (and the like) before we both finished changing into all the clothes we took in. Andy called to see where we were so I told them to wait for us outside the lingerie section. So much for being lesbians now…! (Although I am bisexual)

Saleslady: So what do you think, girls?
Lisa: I like the black, not the other. *sees the boyfriends coming back*
Me: Me too, I’m just showing him.

Man, she seems either quite:

  1. Keen on checking out breasts or
  2. A very persistent salesperson.

But they most likely don’t get commission, so I don’t see what they point was.

And we just hung around, the four of us. I think the saleslady must’ve took the hint because she went into the change rooms to serve another lady, leaving us to decide.

Plonk.
RUN!!!

And that was how we escaped.
That was fun!

Evening
Dinner

After, I got home and freshened up a bit before going to have family dinner to celebrate our birthdays (Brandon and I have birthdays on the same day and month). We had some very delicious seafood, took some photos and then went home feeling satisfied.

That night…
Chatting

I explained the whole story to Andy. “I think she’s a lesbian.”

And then I repeated the story to Tim to have this said, “Yep, definitely a lesbian. You could have asked her for an orgy and got her fired!”

After all, I thought it was because of my new hairstyle… or the outfit I was wearing… Which led Tim to one conclusion, “You’re attracting the wrong gender with the haircut.”

Me whacking stupid

Sounds flattering.
But I don’t think so.

So there you have it, my very interesting 20th birthday.

Bowlingness

admin December 4th, 2006

Andrew & I bumbed around at North Ryde and then met Jono, Lily, Allen, Katy & Dani at Hornsby (Westfields).
Some couldn’t make it: Haichi (too pov and lazy), Amy (work) and Jessie (work) =(

After lunch, we went bowling~
Had 2 games, we all played except Andrew (aching feet)~

Katy won 1st round (whatta pro!! Armani power!!!)
Jono won 2nd (with all those strikes, especially that double at the end!)~
I lost 2nd round ><;;;
*cough*Andrew telling me how to bowl wrongly*cough* -_-
Me & Katy also broke our nails =( Ouchiness ne!

Did the randomest things… photo shooting “shoes united”, stick on tattoos, random games, sticker photo-ing (which Dani has in her bag~ Hope colour’s not faded since it was in such bad quality)… ^_^;; as well as a bowler’s pic and a halo Jono pic…

Jono had to go (why?) and the rest of us went window shopping~
Having more girls than guys, we went to the girly shops while the guys got really bored, especially Allen…

Allen: *walks around* …Hm, so many clothes here…
Winnie: *falls over, sweat-dropping* Go figure.

T’was funnnn ^-^
And funnny! ><;
