ASOS Purchases: August 2011

I made it through the month without purchasing too much from ASOS (only two orders, here and here)!

After buying with the 10% code, I resisted temptation for several others… from memory, it was a 20% off code for full priced items, followed by a 10% code for all items!  And then the 20% code after that for full or sale price items (that was very hard to resist but I did it!)!  To be fair, I did come close a couple times… and with one of my purchases, I received an email giving me an account-linked 10% code for a delay in delivery which I’m thinking of using (maybe)…

Anyway, I got 4 items this month including the burgundy OTK socks (not shown).

Firstly, the Oh My Love 60′s Lace Shift Dress With Fringed Sleeves. I got this in the cream colour in a size UK 8.  The cream colour actually is quite subtle; it looks more like off-white but definitely not white (which I’m happy about). For reference, I’m a size AU 8-10, and the size 8 is perfect.  It is flattering, but it is a little short for my liking (I’m 166 cm, and this dress reaches mid-thigh).  I think I’ll wear it with leggings or at least stockings underneath.  The dress material feels very soft with a cute floral lace pattern, is comfortable to wear, and doesn’t feel flimsy.  One thing I’m still rather in two minds about is the fringed sleeves… but overall, I’m quite happy with this dress.

Secondly, I got the ASOS Colour-Block Pleated Mini Skirt in white, size 8.  Out of the packaging, it needed an iron (see first pic… second pic is ironed, but I don’t think I did a good job on it; it still looks crinkled).  I really like the pleats and colours on this skirt (looks like on the website).  This skirt is actually a bit tight for me, so it sits rather high up on my waist (waistband is approximately 34.5 cm across, so double for size).  Because of that, it is a little short (again, mid-thigh).  Otherwise, it is a well-made skirt (thick cotton, unlined), and I think it’d be cute for spring =)

Then is the ASOS TIMBAD Spike Heel Boots.  I read somewhere that UK show sizing is two sizes less than Australian sizes, and since I’m an AU 7, I went for the UK 5.  With socks, the shoe is a bit too tight (the front is a tad narrow for my wide foot).  It looks like on the website, and is quite cute, but at a mere price of just 13 pounds, the quality is very average; you get what you pay for I guess.  I like it, but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for.

ASOS sent an email giving a further 10% discount code, and while it isn’t much of a discount, it made me browse… things caught my eye, and before I knew it, I have yet made another order. To be fair, two of the three were already on my watch list beforehand, but never made the order as yet.

Skirt: the pleats and the colours on the skirt is too cute! I ordered this in a size UK 8… hopefully it fits well.

The boots: Part of why I got these was because they were on sale… I also think they looked good, and I was somewhat looking for something like this. I am a size AU 7, and I read somewhere that 2 sizes down would be the UK size, so I ordered the UK 5. Fingers crossed they fit!

The socks: I am in love with socks, leggings, stockings, etc that has to do with the legs. And I don’t have burgundy socks, so I ordered them, because I will find a use for them. Speaking of socks and stockings and leggings, I wonder how many I have now!

Oh My Love 60′s Lace Shift Dress With Fringed Sleeves

Made a quick order on ASOS after makingmy decision about the super cute lace dress that’s been on my mind lately! At first, I wasn’t really sure about the fringed sleeves (I even thought about cutting it off…), but I figured I can live with it!

Here it is; the Oh My Love 60′s Lace Shift Dress With Fringed Sleeves. I got the cream… *gasp* and not black, even though it is just as cute (Most of my dresses are black, so decided against it). BUT! If I receive it, and it fits well and I love it heaps and heaps, and is not sold out by then, I will also get the black one!

Wondering Which Size To Choose In ASOS?

I sometimes get people asking me about which size to get when buying clothes from ASOS as I do tend to buy a number of things from their website, so I decided to make a post on it.

But first, a disclaimer: The following are just some personal advice to give you a better idea on how to go about searching for your ASOS size. It may or may not work out the same from person to person.

Now that that’s out there…

The short answer is unfortunately no, you just won’t know for sure until you try it on. However, there are several ways to maximise the chances of the item fitting.

Firstly, ASOS has a size guide telling you the measurements and conversion of sizes in different countries, but I would only use it as a starting point.

Although I sometimes find this hit and miss, I generally stick to my Australian size, i.e. I am an Australian size 8-10, so I also get 8-10 in the UK size. Whether I choose 8 or 10, it’s up to the individual item. For example, if I want to buy a coat, I think about whether or not I want to layer clothing inside the coat. Hence, I usually go for a size 10. If I’m buying a dress, it depends if the make is stretchy or not, or whether I want a tighter or looser fit. From trial and error, I now know that UK 8 is probably better than a UK 10 for me.

Another thing I do is to look at the model’s body size and shape in the catwalk video, and see how fitting/loose the garment is. For example, if it clings onto the model, the item is likely figure hugging, so I go for a larger size. Material also plays a part in the fit (i.e. stretchy material such as spandex is generally more forgiving if you order a slightly smaller size), so do check out the material listed in the description box.

Researching/Googling can also be useful. For example, “X&Y flare skirt”… I search for that keyword in Google and look for some reviews, or read up on a blog where someone has personally ordered the item and commented on it.

I also go to eBay and see if anyone else is selling the same item. Sometimes in eBay listings, the seller will measure the item and put the measurements in the description box (or if you’re interested in their listing, you can also ask them to measure the item via the “ask the seller a question” button). Also, I often see listings where people buy the wrong size, and in their listing, they will say something like: “I bought this from the ASOS website, but it is too small for me. It will best fit an Australian size 8″… so I take that into account as well.

Last but not least, I also look at reviews written on the vogue forums; there’s a thread there (click here) where people and write reviews on whether the garment is true to size, its comfort and quality, and whether it was worth the price. Of course, this is only for a select few items, so you won’t be able to find everything, but perhaps if people consistently comments on a particular brand being “true to size”, you can have more confidence that your item of interest of the same brand is also “true to size”!

This is a long post, and it sounds like a lot of effort just for clothes, but I think it is worth it, and might also is part of the thrill/fun of ordering online (you must be wondering what do I for fun…)! Again, sometimes things don’t work out even though you’ve done your research, but that’s just the nature of online clothes shopping.

If in the case it didn’t work out for you, you can also try selling it on eBay or returning it to ASOS. If you do decide to return it to ASOS, make sure you choose the postage method that will get the package back to the UK on time, and know how much postage is going to cost you (if you buy the wrong size, you will have to cover the postage price), as you don’t want the postage to cost as much as the item you’re returning.

Anyway, I hope it helped! Good luck :)

Warmth With Wool & A Winter Skirt

0 Comments so far

I love how warm it has become this week, after a gloomy and rainy week the last!

All that sun has sent me into smiley mode!

Anyway, I decided to have a go at my tan skirt, a colour I didn’t think I’d wear a few years back, but now loving (though I do feel that the nude/brown/tan colours look strange on me, especially if they’re tops)! Plus, this is my effort to wear more than just blacks, red, whites, and purples.

My Accidental Love For The ASOS Duffle Coat (+Dresses)

An update on my stuff from ASOS after receiving the packages

First up was my black ASOS Funnel Neck Coat With Pleated Shoulder (in this post)… Despite looking quite navy (and not black), and generally looking quite different to what I remembered, I opened the packaging anyway, trying to recall whether I bought the coat or not. It was obviously a duffle coat, but the bag label was for the ASOS Funnel Neck Coat With Pleasted Shoulder.

After pondering about returning the coat and getting a refund, and deciding that it was too much hassle, I decided to give it a shot and tried it on… it fitted nicely, was well-made, and it looked very nice. And plus, I didn’t have a navy coat so it might be a good change from my usual black (the item looks more navy than the pictures).

A few days of having the coat in mind, I decided that I couldn’t wait to wear it! So I wore it while I was out yesterday, and have gained quite a bit of new-found love for this duffle!

So yes, despite it being the wrong STYLE, the wrong COLOUR, and even the wrong SIZE (received a UK8 instead of a UK10, but it was fitted well for my size AU 8-10), it turned out really well!

Next up is the ASOS 50′s knitted dress. I got the petite size 10 in blue. It is a very cute dress, I’ve been eyeing it for a while now. Love the blue colour (so serene), and I love the knit; it is well made, feels nice and soft, and is bouncy. Hard to explain, but the material is nice. The bottom is a looser knit (see picture below), and although I’m worried about it  accidentally getting caught on something, it completes the dress! ♥

From my understanding, the petite sizes cater to people who are 5”3″ (160 cm). Because ASOS is notorious for their dresses being short, and since I’m 5’5″, I thought this dress would be slightly shorter on me… But it wasn’t; it reached just below my knee. Everything fits well, and is comfortable. I feel like something is missing… maybe a belt or a hat or something. Whatever it is, I can’t wait to wear it out!

And I got 2 of the same Vero Moda dress (Vero Moda 50′s Fit And Flare Prom Dress) in different colours and sizes… Because of my love for this dress, I initially got the red one in a size 38 (UK 10) as there wasn’t any size 36 in the red or the black (sold out rather quickly), even after reading that it might be slightly big.

A little while later, a black one in a size 36/UK 8 came back into stock, and even though I hadn’t received the red one as yet, I decided to get it anyway just in case the size 38 was too big.

My hypothesis turned out to be true; size 38 was slightly big, and the size 36 was a good fit. Such a shame, as you can see the fit and flare skirt better on the red than the black… and I have a few black dresses and not so many reds. Because of this, I’m still in two minds about keeping the red dress, and wonder if I can add a figure-hugging waist belt or something to make it look more fitted…

But anyway, this dress is cute on, has a good length, the fabric feels nice and it is comfortable.

ASOS Purchase: 2 Dresses & A Coat

So I went a bit crazy over the last couple of days, placing a few ASOS orders back-to-back.

But! I’m really excited as I’ve finally got the 50′s knitted dress that I’ve been hoping for (written in this post), in the petite size 10. I really hope it fits okay…

Petite 50′s knitted dress (blue)

And the Vero Moda fit and flare dress I got (red, size 38) (in this post) that I suspected to be a bit big but ordered it anyway because it ran out of sizes? I went ahead and bought another one when the black size 36 came back in stock! So now I’ve got more of a chance of having this dress fit (silly, I know!)

I also snagged a sold out coat I’ve wanted that came back in stock in my size (I suspect someone returned it as there was only one left)… Too many coats won’t hurt, especially in winter (so I say…) =]

So, I Kinda Made Another ASOS Order…

But, this time, it was for my brother. Sort of…

He’s been wanting a coat, and I found a nice looking trench, and decided to order it for him.

ASOS Funnel Neck Trench Coat

Shell: 62% Wool, 19% Viscose, 19% Polyester
Lining: 100% Polyester

He’s been going to the gym lately, and looks a little bulkier, so I ordered this coat in the large. Hopefully it fits nicely enough when it arrives, but should do as coats are usually more forgiving.

The problem was this dress…

Vero Moda 50′s Fit And Flare Prom Dress

I actually spent ages reading reviews and such for sizing… Basically, what I gathered was an array of mixed reviews. Some say Vero Moda dresses are true to size, and some say that they have dresses that are on the smaller side, and some say it is a little generous in size.

Ahhhh, Y U SO INCONSISTENT?

In general, for this specific dress, I came to the conclusion that it will be a little on the generous side… so being a size AU 10, I should be getting the EU 36…

BUT!

Size EU 36 was sold out in both the red and the black (It’s still available in the brown, but I’m not very fond of it)… and so I pondered and pondered on the size EU 38…

Since that was running low on stock as well, ASOS is having a 50% off summer sale at the moment and I love the dress so much and I simply could not resist… I took the plunge and bought the red in size EU 38 anyway.

SO. I hope it fits well!

I Heart Bows!

0 Comments so far

Anyone who knows me know I love bows! Bows are the cutest things ever! <3

I love bows so much that sometimes, in my free time, I just sit there and google bows…

No, really. I do.

Another thing is, I browse ASOS almost every day.

I combine the two things a fair bit, and found some cute things!

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this before, as I look at the jackets and coats section every other day!

I can’t find a picture where a model has it on, but I’ve seen it somewhere on the website, and it looks quite cute on!

Bow stockings

Speaking of bow stockings brings heartache as it reminds me of my own pair… What happened?

Well, let me tell you this; my feet/toe nail (?) has a horrible reputation for being harsh on stockings… So the first time I wore my bow stockings, I actually wore socks underneath to protect my stockings them…

Fast forward 12 hours of walking around in lab, my feet decided to be a little nasty, and pierced through both my socks AND my stockings, leaving a massive hole in the poor things! So, my first time wearing them is probably my last also. What a waste, as I really loved them!

Anyway.
Let’s not talk about that anymore.

Oh, another thing I just remembered! I’ve been looking for ages for one of my bow rings (yes, an ASOS one), and I still can’t find it (this one here)… But I guess I have another 3 bow rings around, so that’s okay…

So.

Other times when I’m not browsing ASOS for bows, I browse Alannah Hill!

I also love (intact) love hearts! I think they’re so cute!

And Eiffel towers. So pretty!

And a sweetheart neckline on a dress or a bodice is just too adorable!

Okay. That is all.
